Do's and don'ts
Do's and Don'ts
• It might be fun to give stuff away when you’re in a village. Don’t give out candy or money, because bolder kids get more of it than shy kids. Give them a book! Buy cute (Laotian or English) kids books at the market and hand these out. They will be read by everyone. It’s a good cause, because most villages don’t have books! • Showing affection for someone (like kissing) is not done in public; it makes other people feel uncomfortable. • Laotians greet each other by pressing their palms together in front of their chest. Men might just shake hands too. • Your feet are used for walking or sports, you don’t put them on the table or point at anyone with your foot. • Putting your hands on someone’s head is very rude. It’s not a big problem with kids. Smiling at people around you may make them forgive you faster. • Laotians appreciate it when you shower every day and look proper. • There’s no nude swimming. • Take off your shoes before entering somebody’s house. • Laotians speak softly and avoid confrontations. Never speak with a raised voice. • Always ask first if you want to take a picture of someone. • Try to eat Laotian food, then you’re helping the people. • Enter temples in proper clothes; especially remember to cover up your shoulders. • Monks are respected highly in Laos. They also speak a little English. They like having a conversation with people. Women can’t touch them, not even their clothes. • Don’t use drugs. The consequences when you are caught can be very severe. • Don’t buy antiques or mounted animals. This is illegal.
