Reactions of an enthusiastic volunteer
It is almost impossible not to have an internet connection, even in the most far away islands there was some kind of internet connection.
About the project itself; The Khongdistrict is a large area, with many small villages. We drove from Pakse (Laos) to this area and we noticed that the rice fields we saw looked very arid. Between June and November they are green, if it rains enough. We operated from Don Ded and that was ok. You can sleep there from 20.000 or 25.000 kips in a bamboo hut without air conditioning, or one with for 50.000 kip. Furthermore you can eat well there and you can take a boat to the main land (Nakasang) where you can meet with the KDC. When you do this, prepare yourself that your meeting is not exactly on time, there is a margin of about half an hour, but this is customary in the whole of Laos.
Further costs will be your transportation. When you go by car to bring material to distant schools you can count on 100.000 kip. These costs may be paid by the foundation when you are active for the people in Khong. The members of the KDC have a moped, do when you use this you only have to pay for the petrol. If you want to take part in the brush-your-teeth- program, volunteers who have been there can give you extra information.
I recommend you to take part! We found it the best experience of our trip (and I do not tell this because Adrie will read this mail too). We enjoyed the local people and the area. During the first few days you will be amazed by the cordiality of the people up to a point that you do not want to leave.
