The people in the Khong District don’t have an easy life. 

The government doesn’t interfere much with the local villages. There’s no regular mail service, no general health care and no elderly care provided by the authorities. When people get sick, there usually isn’t any money to see a doctor. And the doctor does not have much knowledge anyway due to a lack of education. 

When the harvest is meagre, the whole family must live very poorly. Worldvision made a clip, which shows how the poorest people of the Khong District live.

No opportunities to get extra money

Most families live off the harvest of their rice field and by fishing. 

There aren’t many opportunities to make extra money. Most families have to spend their income on food, and after that there is nothing left. There is no money for improvement. 

This leads to a lot of people living in poverty and a high number of child deaths. Also the living expectation for people in the Khong District is 20 years less in comparison to people in The Netherlands. 

A lack of basic needs

A lack of basic needs, like clean drinking water, toilet facilities, healthy food and health care makes the people of the Khong District very vulnerable. When the people get sick they barely have access to decent health care. 

Foundation Friends of the Khong District works with other organizations and partners to improve the basic needs. 

Education must improve

In the Khong District a lot of children don’t go, or only shortly go, to school. The number of drop outs is high and the children who do go to school are being given very bad education. 

There is not enough school material and not enough qualified teachers. Good education is a powerful tool against poverty. That is why the foundation Friends of the Khong District is working hard to provide better education and to make education more accessible for everyone.
